TL:DR Long story short, we're the best at forumming. And ARRSE is filled with the dregs of the forces who never made it far enough in life to have anything better to do than talking about the forces all day every day and are a bit sore from all the butthurt the modern world provides.4 points -
I like to be as self reliant as possible... I think while most sites will have a First Aider by necessity to tick the H&S and Insurance box, (apart from the few sites that have medical professionals on their day off) they will generally be no better qualified than the average office or factory first aider, and that's hit and miss quality wise. And while they can maybe do the whole CPR thing (I've never seen need for this - thankfully), in my humble opinion, while they may love stocking their first aid box with all the gauze, eye wash and burn dressings they can, maybe with a defibrillator (for which, they aren't trained) tucked under the sling and surgical scissors, when it comes to most typical skirmish injuries - bumps, scratches, nettle stings, welts, hi-cap finger, ankle twists, and assorted boo-boos etc, they just don't make things better the way my mother can, so I'd rather try to do it myself. If it's something more serious than a bit of a boo-boo, site First Aiders tend to be unable to really help anyway, and refer you on to A&E, your GP or local GUM clinic as necessary. And I'm always mindful of announcing my injuries too loudly, lest the resident survivalist come up offering his KFC wet wipe, needle and thread all pulled from the handle of a Bowie knife.3 points

So I finally got round to finishing my ergonomic grip for USP project. I actually finished making the grip addition yonks ago, but it wouldn't allow me to use a SERPA. Grinding a bit off the outside SERPA flap has sorted that... When I 1st finished it I was majorly underwhelmed. During the sculpting process I had made it completely smooth and it had turned out looking very professional, but then I decided that it would function better with a textured surface. I tried a few options for scoring it, but couldn't get anything to look right. I went with using a posidrive to make rows of cross-dimples, thinking I would be able to make them very neat... well, as you can see, that didn't actually pan out so well. Trouble is by then, if I had wanted to change it, I'd have pretty much had to start over. TBH that is what I should have done I could have used rough sand paper to squeeze into a smooth surface for textured panels, leaving the bits which this could not do neatly, the ridge details, smooth. Ho hum... I had been considering throwing it away and making another, but looking at it now I think it is sorta cool though. Pig ugly, but cool! Functionally it is excellent. It fits my hand exactly. It puts the pad of my trigger finger exactly on the trigger, so squeezing it pulls straight back, there is no under or over reach pushing or pulling L<=>R on my aim. Because it is shaped from my hand holding it arm extended aiming, it is not possible for me to hold it in any other way - as soon as I grip it and extend my arm, the sights are lined up to my right eye so it is only the elevation I need to correct before pulling the trigger. The method is simple: wrap the pistol grip in no more than 2 layers of clingfilm; kneed the FIMO until it is uniformly warm and pliable; pack it in rough shapes onto the film; (using washed and talcum'd hands) squeeze; remove excess and bulk up the ridges which your grip naturally forms between your bones; squeeze again and aim; rinse and repeat until you have it. Bear in mind that it is the ridges digging in to the underside of your knuckles and the bit on the opposite side which the heel of your thumb presses against which form the perfect aim, but for comfort you need to use enough bulk that the bit in between, where the centre of your palm goes, makes solid contact. I did this by extending the ridges further back than just squeezing the FIMO produces - it looks waaay better like that when it is smooth too! Also note that the top (above that decorative circle/hole/majig) forms a ridge to keep your trigger finger exactly in place. Once you have it sussed, leave it in the fridge for a few hours to take some of the pliability out of it, slice the cling film and carefully slide the lot off the pistol grip. If you have made it as 'wraparound' as i have here, it will not come off without a little bending, which obviously runs the risk of warping the whole thing; chilled FIMO does have a small amount of springiness to it however and you just have to be careful that you have the formed shape imprinted in your minds eye so that as you proceed you notice if it does bend beyond its elastic limit and by how much. You also need to find something ceramic, stone or metal to rest it on while you bake it. I used a stainless steel grill-pan handle resting on a piece of stone from the garden; this meant that the thumb-heel part rested lightly against the baking tray, but none of the FIMO's own weight had a tendency to bend it during the initial stage of the bake. TBH I've forgotten what temp and for how long, but I do remember being worried that my gas fan oven might not be able to work cold enough! I did open the oven door a couple of times to let some warmth out, just in case. Anyway there are loads of tutorials online. My advice is to err on the side of caution. If it doesn't quite work 1st time you can always bake it again, but if you over do it, any thinner bits near the edges will go crispy, brittle, and come off in use (that happened to a couple of ridge ends when I did one for my SVD - although TBF the design for that wasn't as robust as this anyway). Don't forget to remove the clingfilm before baking The final attachment was done with Evo Stik, but Araldite, UHU, Bostik or any decent impact adhesive which remains flexible would do the trick - you can see in the last pic how successful I was at baking this one so it kept the intended shape, ie very: there are no gaps where those ridge ends curl around the grip, which would be the most obvious place for a fuck up to manifest, but nevertheless it did not come out of the oven as perfect as when it was sculpted on the clingfilm - there are a couple of <0.5mm gaps above that circle/hole/majig decoration and where that part squidges inside the trigger guard, so flexible glue is the way forward.2 points

Don't worry about the bogs. It's not like Glastonbury etc with 80K ppl per shitter and all eating from Dave's Burger & Botulism Van. The bog/punter ratio is good so they don't get so full you can see a stalag-shite growing up through the pan; the available food has been pretty hygienic both times I've been, so you don't get queue's waiting to squit through the eye of a needle and spread their e-coli to all and sundry; people aren't getting wasted either so bogs aren't coated in puke or used by blokes who just pull it out and let go the bladder so if they hit the pan it's by chance rather than aim; in short hiring your own is a waste of money. Having used the public ones one year and shared a private one last time, I can tell you the only thing you gain by hiring your own is that it will probably be a little closer to your camp, unless you camp near the public ones (in which case you deserve the midnight ramblers tripping over your guy ropes, etc)...1 point

Then maybe heroshark is the way to go. It took me a lot of hours to get this right and multiple goes, but in the end I got it into a reasonable state. Part of the reason it didn't fit perfectly the first time is I didn't want to cut too much off (you can always take more off but never put more on) and because with the elastic off its hard to measure perfectly I kept on that caution side. On the dremel I used two tools. The cutter wheel for the main cuts and the sander parts for taking away the sharp edges and smoothing it out. That sanding wheel really helped a lot to clean up the cuts where the wire cutters especially left spikes.1 point -

Getting a mesh mask to fit under the goggles takes a bit of effort. I used a dremel, some wire cutters and a hot glue gun. I followed these instructions: I see a lot of people with mesh masks that don't fit under their goggles very well, the picture above being a great example with the big gaps under the eyes. With the big goggles Revision Desert Locusts the nose doesn't get covered and with small goggles the face under the eyes doesn't. I also think in a lot of cases the mesh mask is too long for peoples faces, it should just come to the chin and no further, but based on the way the headband pulls you often have to cut from the top and not the bottom so it naturally sits in the right place. You just need to spend some time with the right tools. I ended up cutting my mesh mask 3 times. The first time got the right shape but I had it sometimes interfering with the goggles at the sides, it could fit just not most of the time and it depended too much on where the goggles were on the face and it wasn't the ideal place. The second time I fixed that but then what would happened is the mesh would have a tendency to push the goggles up a little. I fixed that by trimming off the top and reducing the overall length and now its just 1cm past the chin. So its going to take a little while to get it right and its going to take a few attempts at cutting before you have it working as you want. But don't do what most people do and just live with it. Its easy enough to fix with some glue and some wirecutters, just make sure you can pull the glue off to modify it again in the future because you'll almost certainly want to tweak it.1 point -

Don't worry we're not all like that. But can you imagine having to share a room with people like that for a living? I can remember in basic, our training corporals trying to get us to look down on civvies as a lower class of human being. Wherever you go in the world there will always be people who think they are a step above and like to do people down but there was no need for that. If those low lives who made those comments are actually serving (which I doubt is the case), they in particular DO NOT deserve our respect at all and I am ashamed they can been seen a representative of me and my former colleagues dead and alive by some people or even themselves.1 point -

Getting an rif under 18
Jedi_Master reacted to Airsoft-Ed for a topic
Basically, buy a two tone and then "use the gun so much the paint rubbed off" read as: Rub the paint off. Or paint over it. Personally I'd rub it off because adding more paint just looks shit. Then see if you can count on one hand the number of people who give a fuck. I bet you can't. You're only going to be arrested for anything gun related, if you wave it about in public or try and rob someone/a shop/an institution with it. And in that instance, that's what you're going to be arrested and banged up for. Not painting it black when it should be blue. The law doesn't give shit number 1 about two tone laws, and neither does anyone else. There are too many stupid loop holes for you to jump through to avoid the charges, that the charges simply do not exist. No one in the history of ever, have been arrested and locked up for painting an airsoft gun, selling one to someone under the age of 18, or any of the other stuff that's been mentioned in this thread. The Association of Chief Police Officers have actually issued a statement which says the section of the VCRA with relation to RIFs, is unenforcible. Meaning they can't do anything to you, even if you're caught. Which is basically down to the fact that you will NEVER be caught, unless you walk down the street pointing it at someone, at which point, as I mentioned above, it'll be the fact that you did that, that you'll be getting nicked for. Get your dad to buy you a two tone, then do what you want with it. Possession isn't illegal. Painting one is, but who's going to know? Who's going to care if they do know? Who's going to "tell on you"? If anyone does, nothing will happen because there's nothing wrong with owning a RIF. The whole two tone debate is so pointless that I can't believe I even bothered writing all this down, it isn't worth the time or effort to talk about.1 point -
My First Game
JamesAirsofterAgent reacted to Yawns for a topic
So I rolled up to the location. It was a generally large multi-activity site, And it was rather complex. We walk up to a building, enquire about the airsoft before being ushered into a dark tent next door. Friendly place. Nice guy doing the ref-stuff. First thing that hits me is many CM16 carbines all lined neatly in a row with a bag of 2000 Bio-BBs next to them. Me, Jacob and George (Friends) sort out the payments, Get informed of site rules (No anomalies, Standard rules) Oddly, 90% were common-sense based. Odd. We get suited & booted, No expense spared really, I was genuinly impressed when you have access to unlimited bottles of water (Not the cheap stuff, either) for no extra cost. We stroll out of the tent, After being initiated, I became friends with a boy known as Chandler. Top Lad, Site regular, Became my 'Partner' for the night. Oddly enough, We walk past a camp site full of 7-10 year olds, Rather alarming considering we all had RIFs and camo getabouts. We enter the site, People take it in turns to test their gun. I place in my mag. Roll the wheel on the bottom, Flick of the safety and fire 3 shots down a long grass pathway. It is unbelievably satisfying. I'd waited years for this. It was 100% worth it. We roll up to these tents and are assigned teams for the game. Attackers and Defenders, Defenders had to protect their medic in a small huddle of tents. To get medic'd you'd have to run into an empty tent and wait for the medic to cross, Hence adding a sense of risk for the medic. It was a no-win game for the defenders, The Medic would die and it was a waiting game to find out when. Me, Chandler and a guy in a blue hoodie roll into one tent with two windows. I take right side, Watching across to the left flank, Chandler doing the opposite. Blue hoodie man is ducking in and out of a gap in the right edge, Considerably effective. I had 3 deaths, And 'kills' that round. The reason I'm so vague is that I never saw people throw their hand up and go 'HIT' but I saw BBs flying at a deadly rate towards people, and after I'd get enemies patting me on the back saying 'Nice shots man' etc. Second game I despised, Purely because it didn't fit my playstyle. It was in an open field with a 'fort' of tyres in the middle. inside there were plastic cannisters painted gold, these were ingeniusly reffered to as 'Golds' The team who got in and collected the most at the end of the game won. You could only pick up one at a time mind you. First game was shambolic. I get shot down, only just get 1 gold and thats it, opposition win. Next game, Me and chandler leave our guns at respawn and sprint to get golds. I take most of the shots, Allowing him to swoop in and grab one for the team. I walk back to respawn and grab my gun. Queue ten minutes of being hit and 0 kills before them losing on the basis that they didn't put the golds in the right place, So ref declares us winners by default. The next game was AMAZING... We had to push up through dense woodland to capture and control a point for 5 minutes, before pushing back into the enemy spawn to finish the game, Controlling the point was great. Call me a Codsofter but I was to cool shooting out of a tower whilst people ran in to take the point. the five minutes ended and we rushed, It was the best most dramatic moment in the game. We reach a hill and look down to see many people in tin huts below, We peak from cover and gain a fair few hits, Whilst hearing metal clinking at BBs bounced of the chicken wire. We slide down the hill and its CQB, Guns on Semi. Ref calls 'You can't shoot over the top of the huts' I thought this encouraged smart corner gameplay, I crouch to listen for enemies, Before seeing a gun-barrel waving underneath the corrigated-metal, I get full-auto'd to the leg from about a metre away. as I limped back to respawn I heard ref call game over, win for the attackers. It's important to add I did get kills that game, Just nothing special, Just emptying mags into a hut below. Damn cool though. Luckily my wound wasn't bleeding, Just multiple blood red circles all down my knee, I'm not complaining though, I just looked abit stupid in PE today. Next game, We started in the huts, And we had to push out. It was horrible whilst adrenaline-pumping at the same time. Remember the hill from earlier? we were now pushing up it, People spraying covering fire whilst we scramble up, Taking the fight to them. This was when I had my first confirmed kill. Not one, But two, And it was bloody worth it. I was far ahead of my teammates, I was sat behind a bush, winding my mag while my team fell back. I see a guy peaking a corner in the CQB point that we contested earlier, The same guy from earlier aswell. So I click it up to full auto. Lean out and land 5 BBs into his chest, And send him off to respawn with a cheeky wink. Then I rush round the corner and tap fire the next guy who was in a bush about twenty metres back. Game ends, We won. Summary? Great night, Great games, Great people. I like airsoft. I like this forum. Expect to see me round. -Reece PS: It's my brithday today. got a nice sum of money to start airsoft, Because at my site you can rent at no additional cost, I'm tempted to get a pistol as my first gun, Thoughts? This with This Mag ? I'm not sure if the cross-company thing would work. Fill me in1 point
