Given the way inflation is heading, even buying airsoft RIFs may be better than having cash in the bank or under the bed. At least that's what I'm intending to tell Mrs Borg.4 points

Second hand purchase of RIF
Tactical Pith Helmet and 3 others reacted to Rogerborg for a topic
I figure that anyone who's taken the time to find and join and forum, read the VCRA and ask an honest question isn't going to be a problem for the hobby. If it can read in feet per second, it's easy enough to look up. Yes, all (decent) sites will expect you to chrono your guns before playing, and will generally tag them for the day. I'll spare you the rant on how that doesn't actually stop rogues, it's not relevant to honourable chaps. Target shooting is fun, but skirmishing is a real rush, give us a shout if you intend to go along and we'll doubtless bombard you with a list of things that you absolutely must have. (Spoiler: Decent boots and eye protection that you're prepared to test by shooting it yourself with your hottest gun and heaviest BBs)4 points -

tbh i wouldn't even go that far initially, nowt wrong with the ml macaron+omega combo but no sense cracking open a brand new gun (and voiding what passes in airsoft for a warranty) until you've got a clear benchmark and goal as to what you want to improve.3 points -

@Allen428 if you don't mind me asking, how much did the shirt cost ? Shouldn't be an issue, Ive bought a few dpm bits recently, as my old kit appears to have "shrunk" (??), some issue & some knockoff, & even the knockoff kit was spot on for pattern & colour, so the material is out there ?3 points

Partly correct They will have expired, and shops are unlikely to accept them (They may or may not be accepted depending on the person behind the till) Banks will be unlikely to accept them for exchange, but your bank may accept them as a deposit The post office may accept them for exchange The Bank of England will continue to accept them https://www.bankofengland.co.uk/banknotes/exchanging-old-banknotes If you have large quantities of them and don’t want a record for the tax man or police to be able to trace then get spending them quickly The paper £20 & £50 are ‘current’ until 30 September 2022, and will be ‘withdrawn’ from 1 October 2022 which is when they officially cease to be accepted. But no shop is required to accept a specific note today As time gets close there will be less options to spend or exchange them https://www.bankofengland.co.uk/banknotes/current-banknotes3 points

The usual technical objection that with sufficient hop up, more energy does mean more maximum range. But I agree that consistency is much more important or else you'll be lobbing BBs 5m further but hitting everything except what you're aiming at.3 points
-
It's a bit low but within the tolerance of what is quoted on their listing (330fps +/- 10%). A tightbore barrel will probably bring it up a bit but it's fine to use as is for now. Run it for a couple of games and decide what it lacks then.3 points

I agree, he should have at least sent a picture of the available material but if that's all he can get then it's probably what he assumes everything on the market is like. Might be worth the OP posting in the Lindnerhof group on Facebook to see if anyone else has the same issue https://www.facebook.com/groups/807151342686715 Probably, but where does Roman source his materials? Probably not AliExpress.2 points

certainly it wouldn't be enough to warrant the risks associated with opening the thing up with limited teching experience. first rule of teching is make sure you have a reliable backup gun before you start messing with it. in the early stages the money would be better spent on other accessories. for example i'd find a bunch of midcaps and an odin (with adapter) would increase enjoyment more than putting the money into making the gun shoot a bit better. but then i really, really hate hicaps.....2 points -
I should maybe re phrase that a 30/40 FPS increase will give a small increase in range that is not worth the money/effort if you are getting 50m accuracy out the box.2 points

I appreciate that, and apologise for any appearance of hostility here. Since you care enough to have read the VCRA, that's a pretty good sign that you'll be a responsible owner. So I'll confirm that legally, you are absolutely fine to purchase and possess an airsoft RIF, even in the Democratic People's Republic of Caledonia. You're not committing any offence, it's entirely on the seller, and on their tolerance for risk. Personally, I'd put that risk so low as to be completely negligible. There are airsoft retailers selling RIFs without any real defence, or openly manufacturing non-airsoft firearms then incriminating themselves on YouTube without any repercussions. A private sale of a used RIF to someone responsible with land to use it on is just not going to be an issue. So if you can find someone who wants to sell, go ahead and buy. If you want to stay clearly within the law, especially in Scotland, the other thing to be aware of is energy limits for airsoft guns. For anything capable of automatic fire, it's 1.3J using "any missile", i.e. heavy BBs, not just the light 0.2gs that the airsoft world is still obsessed with. Anything over that is, strictly speaking a Firearms Act Section 5 prohibited firearm, although I'd be astonished if anyone gets prosecuted over it. For semi or bolt, it's 2.5J. Over that you've got an air gun which needs licensing. Again, not likely to be an issue, I mention it only because I put a "500fps" (i.e. 2.32J) upgrade piston and spring into my cheap airsoft bolt action and it came out at 3.3J! Anything that you buy 2nd hand from someone who has been skirmishing with it is almost certain to be well within those legal limits, as airsoft site limits are lower. https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1968/27/section/57A The bigger consideration is S19, which requires a reasonable excuse for any public possession of an imitation firearm (realistic or otherwise). It's a low bar, and since the same offence applies to air weapons and shotguns, target shooting on private land should be sufficient. Just be aware that it's an affirmative defence that requires proof. I'm sure you already know this, I mention it just for completeness. https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1968/27/section/192 points

While I agree there are plenty of variations in issued dpm kit, I'd expect much better than that from a reputable maker of custom kit, surely he has enough experience in camo materials to have spotted that very obvious fade issues, & as such should have contacted the client (op) to give him the option as to whether to proceed with the job ? would have been better to butcher a couple of genuine (non faded) issue shirts to get the end result than use that ?, agree with the op's comment that it looks like the material you'd buy off a market stall so your little sprogs can play dress up.2 points
-
Agreed, it's playable, and I wouldn't change the spring until you've done everything you're going to do outside of the gearbox, and shimmed and re-lubed inside it. Definitely chrono with some hop on, I've also seen slight rises when adding hop (before it reduces again). Oh, and the usual new-gnu advice, put some silicone lube up the nozzle, give it some time to seep into the o-ring while you clean out the barrel and hop rubber, then blow the lube out the nozzle before re-assembling.2 points

might also want to check with the hop set- sometimes having the hop completely off will result in lower readings. you want to start with it completely off and go up in small increments until you find that sweet spot where the bb is going pretty straight and not flying upwards too much, it'll be good to get familiar with adjusting it as sometimes in-game being able to tweak slightly can be handy for getting some shots to land (eg turning it down to drop rounds behind a barrier). once you have it set, the thing to check would be shot-shot consistency, see what range of velocities you're getting (eg 305-315fps) as that's a gauge of how good the airseal is. as mentioned, good to just run it for a couple of games, get familiar with how it's shooting and get an idea of what areas you might want improved, no point going all out for extending range if your playstyle means you rarely use it.2 points -
Am I the only one seeing the obvious here? If the main reason you're wanting to buy 2nd hand is because of the lower price, why not just buy a second hand two-tone? Everyone wins that way.2 points
-
@Zedward As you understand the issues then you have no problem with a secondhand IF, and for a RIF the seller ought to only sell to you if they are willing to paint it into an IF etc The ultimate answer would be to go out and play a few games when the site opens, enabling you to sign up under UKARA or whichever scheme they use (Note that UKARA itself isn’t a legal VCRA requirement but it’s the ‘best established’ / most recognised one produced by retailers)2 points

The first 4 in the link are all British woodland DPM My point being that there have been many changes, and also between each garment - jacket (which normal people call a shirt), jacket (that is a jacket), smock etc and intended environment (UK/Europe, tropical jungle etc) there are also differences Then just different contractors and different production runs The primary colour difference in your photo isn’t due to fade. Though genuine DPM that he has used will be surplus and could be issued or unissued Issued stock will have gone through many washes and will show on the edges of stitched areas such as pockets etc, unissued will have been sat on a QMs shelf mostly in a dark storeroom until it’s sent back The Army issues 3 sets, so even a soldier who is in barracks does a wash run twice a week (unless they have stocked up by giving storemen extra haribo or raided the drying room if Pte Smith hasn’t put their name and number on the label) Attached is a genuine jacket with a similar colour to yours, it is used and in the closeups you can see the fade, but it was never as dark as your other one Both of yours are genuine but different ‘editons’2 points

EDcase Thanks man, I’m not trying to get around the laws, just making sure what they are. I sold my air guns before the Scottish laws changed, I only used them for targets in the end anyway. I have private land to use the airsoft on, no public nearby, so no worries there. My long term aim is get a Ukara number, just so I can buy in the second hand market. Night, mate, appreciate your and everyone’s advice. ?2 points

You don't need to worry Zedward. As long as no public see it then you won't have a problem with the police. If neighbours might possibly see it then let them know beforehand that its just a toy. If you use your airguns in the garden then they'll likely be used to seeing gun shapes things. I'm sure many here would still sell you a RIF if you explain the situation.2 points

Hi Tommikka, I haven’t shot myself in the foot at all, literally or figuratively. I’m asking the question to stay within the law. I am happy using two tones, it makes no difference to me, it’s just that the second hand market is, obviously, cheaper than new. I don’t want to get myself or a seller into trouble. I appreciate your answer, though, I’m sure there’s a lot of questions on here on ‘how to avoid UKARA’. And yeah, I am sadly well over 18! ☹️ Cheers, Zedward2 points

Yes, but you have to modify it a little with a file or dremel. On the other side to the picture there is a nub poking out, you need to file a section of it flush so it will sit in the lower of the gun. It will make sense when you try. Drum mags are for speedsofters and therefore, shit. Embrace the low ammo count.2 points -

@Rogerborg Everything in your answer is very useful, thank you. That chart is perfect, I’ll be keeping that. I’ll definitely ask what gear I need, I don’t have much beyond eye pro just now. One of the problems I think I’ll face is that my whole life it’s been drummed into me to never, ever point a gun at someone. Now I have to point and shoot at someone. ? My other concern is I’m in my late 40s, fat, unfit, have bad knees and smoke too much. Oh well, in for a penny. Thanks again for your and everyone else’s advice. I have my answer, I’m happy to close the thread. Cheers Zedward1 point -

Some more work tonight. Added some shoulder bits and a breastplate for a more beefcake appearance. Master Chief is my homeboy. Glue edges etc deliberately left rough as I'm going to plastikote the lot prior to painting. Tempted to add some sort of detail to the back, maybe some more faux plating, or some sort of pretend environmental control backpack/computer/summat sad like that. Still a bit to do, besides painting. Leg bits require more work but need more hot glue first as I've run out. Also want to beef up the glue joins with rivets or similar.1 point -

can't fault Roman's work as I have a few of his sets which are all a good as my Crye stuff. From the OP picture I'm guessing that the material used is Russian DPM and not British DPM. A giveaway would be how thin it looks. It could also be some of the DPM coming out of China but the colours on that are usually a bit more vibrant. Roman is based in the Ukraine so getting the Russian DPM probably wouldn't be too hard. Getting a refund is either doing a paypal claim for goods not fit for purpose or just sucking it up since he did supply a top in DPM but not the DPM you were hoping for. With hindsight asking for a picture of the material he will be using would have been a good idea but I've never done that as I've trusted his work and reputation, like you. on a slightly different tangent, that DPM he supplied looks a lot like the DPM I was issued pre CS95 after a few washes and a few rounds with the iron (but i still think it's the Russian stuff).1 point -

Gotta laff ? Anyway, back on topic I started off with a Krytac, great rif, upgraded barrel and hop and it served me faultlessly for two year - but it was soulless A bit like driving a nice Japanese car I moved to a TM Scar recoil, again, same upgrades but still felt lacking. That stayed with me for about 4 months ? before I accidentally moved to gbbr’s As my gbbr is a bit of a whinging wee tart unless it’s about 20 deg outside (which is twice a year in Scotland) I have again bought a TM recoil for use during the colder months of the year. For the simple reason I trust it to work out of the bag every time. This can be said about the majority of manufacturers RIF’s out there as long as you don’t unnecessarily tamper with the internals. I don’t think that TM are the saviour of the sport. I think that 80% of the other manufacturers out there will give as good a performance with a little bit of attention by just adding a decent hop rubber and a premium barrel. But does that defeat the purpose of buying a cheaper gun in the first place? Im seeing lots of our players attending with makes that I wouldn’t have considered a couple of years ago and they look & feel great in the hand, but shoot just as well as a TM. So to summarise I don’t know! ??♂️1 point -

My mate Rich there is modelling ESSTAC pouches which also use KYWIs on the Crye airlite convertible chest rig; another combo that could be configured to do what you're wanting. I don't personally know of any different but more value-oriented gear brands that will achieve all this though, you'd have to go with chinese clones of the crye/ferro/spiritus, which I don't recommend but loads of people do. If you're asking about connecting a rifle sling to a chest rig definitely do not, those setups suck balls just get a simple quality 2 point sling - tried, tested, used by the best. Having any kind of dangler hung even lower than usual below that side-pull pouch is gonna be wank for kneeling/sitting/squatting and I don't know of anything in the world that'll stop that huge slap flap you'll have created from punching you in the nethers.1 point
