whats your budget and why do you want good internals if you are just going to up grade everything? you might as well get what ever gun you like the external look of. Going to be rude here and ask have you any experience working on guns or you just watched a bunch of you tube vids that say you have to up grade straight away. Have you actually played airsoft? Off the top of my head G&G, CYMA, specna arms make good m4 guns for reasonable money. VFC make expensive guns that look great but have shit internals, Tokyo Marui are the dad of all modern airsoft and their recoil range is really good and you do not need to up grade them at all. You can get a decent gun for the cost of a gate titan it has a lot of functions most people wont use why do you feel you need it? Rate of fire isn't really important anything out the box is fine if you go for a high rate of fire you run the risk of spamming other players. Accuracy comes from good quality BBs, cleaning your barrel and taking the time and using a range to set your hop right for the weight of BBs you are going to use. range wise most airsoft guns shoot accurately at around 45 to 55ish meters. Unless you go to a DMR or bolt action you are not going to see a massive increase by up grading gears/motor/piston/hop/barrel how much money are you willing to spend for an extra 5/10m range. Basically any gun over £100 is likely to perform decently enough and you can spend a lot of money chasing performance with little to show for it and you may end up making your gun unreliable.5 points

Recommendations: Decent eye pro Decent boots Gloves Cheap poncho for when it pisses it down Quality BBs I am a tinkerer by nature, but even I leave rifs alone until something breaks or a well tested mod is easy to carry out and has proven results on that particular gun, AND which achieves a definite performance aim. Go and enjoy yourself. If you say where you are, perhaps someone on here can meet up with you on site and lead you astray into a life of wasting serious money playing with toy guns, sorry, ;show you the ropes.;5 points -
Why do you want to change anything? have you used the gun? if so have you chrono'd it have you set the hop for the bbs you want to use? have you check the range(if you are getting 50ms you'll be putting in a lot of effort for not massive returns) other than give the barrel a clean unless you have specific goals in mind just leave it alone, especially if you only have one gun you really don't want to start upgrading a gun unless you have a back up.5 points

Looking to spend around maybe £400-500 for everything Didn't massively make my post clear, which is my mistake. By good internals i meant nice easy to work with, and not have a stock part that i might not change that isn't very good; i.e. bad compression/bad shimming out of the box. Not rude at all, very valid questions. I have been playing airsoft for maybe 4/5 months now, and the only upgrade I've done to my current gun is change the motor as the stock one kept getting hot and draining my battery quickly. And there's a few reasons i want to buy a gun to upgrade: 1. i want to learn airsoft tech and i feel like this is a good way to 2. i want to have a quicker semi-auto rate of fire 3. i want to have really good range and accuracy I want to hair-trigger my gun, run 11.1v lipo, and have the ability to change the trigger response and use the pre-cocking. But if there's an alternative that's cheaper that does most of the same things please let me know I currently use asg devil .25, what do you recommend if this is something you wouldn't class as good quality? I have been trying to do research about what guns are best suited to things but most things i found were about 3 years old at a minimum. And not sure how up to date these posts are about what's reputable or not. thinking about it, you are right. its best to find a sexy gun, play with it, see what needs/could be improved and upgrade from there, right? Do you think its worth going to visit a shop to have a feel of some guns? (do they let people do that? my closest shop is about an hour or so away), just because the gun i bought previously is horrendously loud and i found that out the hard way. Also in addition, is it worth (potentially) looking for a 2nd hand gun? as i know with some things, some people never really bother going for 2nd hand products (through a private purchase), as there is no warranty.4 points

@steverebo mate, in more than twenty years I've never had to "upgrade" a new gun straight away, some I've used for years without having to touch them, my oldest gun has been running perfectly for approx 18 years ffs, not even serviced as such. IF IT AIN'T BROKE DON'T FIX IT just play & enjoy it....... Simples4 points

I respectfully disagree, I've been using a knock off happily for years. The handles break off, always, but it's not rocket surgery to fettle something on, and OP is a 3d sorceror. Worse case, you can get a knockoff + a whole new set of Odin internals for less than an Odin. I just wouldn't recommend sinking big money into anything for someone who hasn't played yet. Eyepro, boots, then get out and play. My Specna is actually fairly fussy about midcaps, although to be fair most of mine have tired springs. It works well with its own midcaps, or hi-caps. If you do want to swap barrels, ZCI or AOLS are both decent for not much money, and of course Maple Leaf or Prometheus rubbers. Specnas are back to being decent enough out of the box, they shouldn't need anything done except for a barrel clean. Even the lube on mine was actually on the gears rather than just sneezed all over the shell. One thing to be aware of is that they come with an M120 spring (too spicy) and an M90, and will likely have the M90 fitted. It's sufficient, but I'd suggest throwing an M100 in there for woodland use - all conditional on what air seal and actual muzzle energy you get. On that, if you are going to get into airsoft teching, a chrono is pretty much required in order to avoid chrono oopsies at site - I've had a couple of guns accidentally come out way hot after getting the air seal spot on, and had to down-spring them. I agree that the best thing to do with that Nuprol charger is return it as soon as possible, before it ruins your battery or burns your house down. That isn't a joke, we'd had multiple reports of fires. SkyRC stuff is where it's at, an S65 will be fine for most people. And I completely get the urge to tinker, I'm forever messing around with my collection even while saying "Stop it, Rog, you know what's going to happen." Straight up though, if you actually intend to play, getting one working, stock gun and leaving it alone, particularly inside the gearbox, is a solid plan. Those child slave labourers are getting pretty good at what they do. Many videos and Reddit threads you'll see or read are... idiomatic to problematic. Approach with an open mind as regarding their veracity.3 points

in case it wasn't clear from everyone else, tinkering straight away isn't the greatest idea, especially when you don't have a reliable backup. don't get me wrong, tinkering on pews can be enjoyable and rewarding for those so inclined, and i do recommend people learn it themselves because in the long run it's great being able to sort issues yourself, buy secondhand with confidence etc, but the time and place to dive into it is not when you only have one pew, no experience and nothing to fall back on should it not work out. as someone who didn't take that advice and jumped straight in trust me the walk of shame when your latest experiment has resulted in a gun that doesn't shoot, or shoots so badly it's unplayable gets very old very quickly. ^ is definitely a better avenue for you to look at spending your money/effort on, you can include things like slings, maybe a red dot (unless you prefer iron sights, that's fine too), magazines (eg midcaps+a decent speedloader if you don't like winding hicaps). once you've got setup and are comfortable you can try grabbing a cheap secondhand gun and have a crack at tinkering with it, safe in the knowledge that your main gun is going to still serve you well when needed.3 points -

Do nothing to the gun internally until you have played a fair bit and see if there is anything you feel like needs improving. Trying to upgrade a gun without a goal and the knowledge is pointless and will 99% percent of the time just make it worse. Chuck a few external bits on like a red dot or scope and get a sling. Return the nuprol smart charger and get a sky rc t100.3 points -
No offence @Jxmie, if you know so much about these "must have" upgrades, how is it you know nothing about the guns their best suited to. Why not just find an AR platform that you like the look of ? (irrespective of price), come back & ask if the manufacturer is reputable, most are, & then actually play some games with it in its standard set up. You'll probably be pleasantly surprised that it does what you ask of it, & will likely continue to do so without you throwing any more money at it, at least for a while anyway.3 points

Oh no, why do you want to fiddle with a perfectly good purchase straight away? ? After all that, assuming it actually works, how will you even know if you've improved it or not? ? If you really want advice then just clean the barrel as our Stew said and enjoy it. Its good out of the box unless you got a lemon. Think about upgrading if something goes wrong or definitely needs improving after using it and getting to know the sport. ...and really appreciate your wife ?3 points

a proper Odin speed loader is exspensive but worth it compared to the knock offs. Mag wise it's generally better to stick to the same brand as the gun but with Airsoft that's not a guarantee. Generally MAG mid caps have a relatively high capacity and are more likely to feed fine than other brands. You take commissions for printing might pay the next gun?2 points
-
Cheers guys for the advice maybe a bone yard gun after a few months of playing will tickle that tinkering itch, what speed loader and mid cap mags would you guys recommend? Just grabbed a red dot sight and owning a 3d printer has some advantages as I have printed a nicer fore grip and a mag well is on the print bed now2 points

Mate without intending to be harsh but you know jack shit about Airsofting and your planning to rip your new gun apart (that you haven’t even used yet !) because you’ve seen some YouTube vid’s ?? Chill out , take a breath , go to your 1ST skirmish day use it then repeat this process multiple time THEN start thinking “do I need to upgrade XYZ in it or not ?” ? Belive me you’ll enjoy the sport a lot more if you learn to walk before even think about running .? ??2 points

No harm in chucking a nicer hop rubber in it maybe even a nicer barrel if you want to throw some more money at it. But as the others said if the gearbox is ticking over fine at a reasonable consistent enough power leave it be till it breaks.2 points

A group of us went through a phase of playing with them. Upgraded oil pumps, Amal carbs, Brit pistons, bigends and valves set in new seats as they often leaked from new. Converting the 350 to 500 was easy IIRC. My uncle had a genuine 1940s example, teles but still rigid. Not many people think that fettling a bike, car or rifle is an essential part of enjoying ownership. I think that's the sector of the market that TM aim for.2 points -

I do belive that’s the recoil mechanism (if I remember correctly from the one I had) and it’s only job is to bump the cocking lever back and fourth nothing else to do with use of the gun so has no effect on its usability , I think .1 point

The Cybergun PT92 makes a point of claiming a whopping 328fps... on 0.12g. That's about 0.6J, or ~250fps on 0.2g Since I have one, and I'd never actually chronoed it, I've just popped out to the garage to test that claim. With a freshly lubed piston o-ring, and a cold spring (more springier), it peaked at 0.54J (240fps), then tailed off to below 0.37J (200fps). That's actually more than I expected, and 0.37 - 0.4J is AEPs level, and just about usable. But they tend to be consistent, this thing was (literally) all over the place. Fine for a fun humiliation kill, but not suitable for either skirmishing or target shooting. What for? Target shooting or airsoft skirmishing? If the latter, CQB, or woodland? As a primary, or as a rarely used secondary?1 point

Spring TM's are much lower then that. Honestly there is no such thing that I am aware of due to the lack of air volume. It would be too difficult to cock.1 point

Best spring pistols are probably TM. You aren't going to get high FPS as a pistol will be to hard to cock with a high power spring.1 point

Take a bow, Specna Arms Edge 2.0, for example: https://www.patrolbase.co.uk/specna-arms-sa-h23-edge-2-0-tm-carbine-aeg What's not to like? QC spring, GATE ASTER mosfet, decent rotary hop, reasonable enough 6.03mm barrel, pre-wired to Deans. Oh, and as I found to my surprise, my Edge 1.0 came flat hopped out of the box, something that I've not seen listed as a feature, and didn't even realise since I went straight to a Maple Leaf and threw the stock parts in the bits box. The stock motor in the Edge 1.0s is OK but not great. If the 2.0 is the same then it's a candidate for replacement. Stock barrel, or ZCI or AOLS. Feed it 0.28g BBs, and enjoy.1 point -

@Jxmie I don't have any answers for you, however I'm intrigued by your post, and being a year into airsoft (and enjoying disassembling things as much as playing) I've gone through some of what you're talking about. Looking at your posts, and what you appear to be trying to build, my only thought is that you'll be creating something that will be almost always be red lining itself (motoring analogy). Low gear ratio, hair trigger, pre-cocking, 11.1v, performance motor, semi only are all factors that combined give you a Formula 1 car of a gun that will have a shorter lifespan as it's under such stress and may well shit itself badly at some point, all that energy being pushed thought the motor into the gearbox / it having to stop quickly on semi auto / hold that spring back ? I'll be honest in that if money was no object a lot of what you've said I'd be doing, but not unless I had a backup M4 that I always took to each game with me "just in-case".1 point -

Now, I'd never make fun of anything that anyone buys, considering my completely pish loadout which consists of a mighty Unreal Tournament 2004 Redeemer-esque slayer of a UAR, an awe-inducing plastic fantastic Lancer Tactical M4 and an utter death machine of a 20 quid Chinesium 1911 springer. Add in some thoroughly geeky and naff fake sci fi foam armour, and I'm less Master Chief, more Disaster Chief. However... before purchasing my awesomely unimpressive gear I did my research thoroughly, so knew what to expect and made my choices deliberately within my budget. And I'm happy with my choices. Quite amazing how many folk jump into things, not just airsoft, blindly spaffing wads of dough like Rishi Sunak on a bender without having the faintest scooby doo about what their riches are going towards. Their choice I suppose. Wow, new or used? Not a hi capa fan but thats mental money. Think Airsofts going to resemble Mad Max soon, folk turning up at skirms bartering over gnus and having duels to decide who gets what ?1 point -

Joules is the actual energy of the BB. This is the number that matters, for range, and impact on the target. 350fps with 0.2g = 313fps with 0.25g = 295fps with 0.28g = 227fps with 0.32g = 1.14J. And you don't have to calculate it, because any chrono sold for airsoft use that you'll buy now will allow you to select your BB weight, and will tell you the energy in Joules, as well as the fps. I am quite serious that I know the energy of my 0.32g BBs but I didn't even look at the fps number, because I don't have to as my local site chronos in Joules. Not all sites do this, as they may find it quicker to look at the fps reading on the chrono and then cross reference it on a chart or cheat sheet, rather than changing the weight setting on the chrono each time. It's really up to the site, my local sets the chrono and looks at the Joules number, some sites use a chart. But even if they use a chart, the underlying truth is that they're applying the same Joules limit for every gun.1 point -
