First Time Teching, Observations Etc.
Rogerborg and 5 others reacted to Ebeneezer Goode for a topic
Had the UAR apart (again) today to solve a niggly ongoing FPS/hop issue which I (correctly) suspected was an air leak. While I was at it I decided to check the cylinder air seal and the general condition of the gearbox, seeing as I've had the gun a couple of years now. As its my first time inside an AEG's guts I thought I'd share my thoughts... Armed with Poundland's finest Rolson mini screwdrivers and a YT video explaining V3 gearbox disassembly/reassembly, I cracked on. Disassembly was a piece of cake. Motor removed via two screws, remove the selector levers, three (or was it four? Cannae remember) hold the shell together plus (on the UAR v3 box) a big clip on the top holding both parts together - wee bit fiddly to remove but doable with some force and not too much swearing. Inside things are pretty simple - three gears, AR latch, cyl/piston and trigger. I removed the cylinder as I wanted to check the seal on the head. Holding my finger against the nozzle and pushing the piston I was pleasantly sueprised to find an excellent seal - no further problems there. A good spray of silicone in the cylinder and then checked the gears. There wasn't much grease in there - I was expecting a mess - so I sprayed some white lithium grease on the gears and shims and, satisfied all was well, went about putting it all back together. The infamous AR latch was actually quite simple to keep in place, the trigger was fiddly but got there in the end after holding it all down firmly in place and screwing the shell together again. The big clip was then slid over the rail at the top of the box to keep it all together - simpler than removal - and then the selector levers were put on again. Next, I examined the hop unit, which was clear there was an air leak there - the hop rubber slid out way too easily, so I added some electrical tape I had lying about and instantly solved the issue. After putting it all back together test shots were now reading 1.07j - back to what the gun was before this started (power dropped to 0.85j and dropped low as 0.3 when any hop applied). So, first time teching experience. My thoughts... There's a lot of fear around AEG internals - having seen first hand and done work, it's honestly not that hard. Granted different gearboxes will have completely different layouts but honestly, I found this pretty simple. Even without the YT video I reckon I'd have managed OK. Secondly... quite a few little bits to lose. Clean, flat, well-lit work area is an absolute myst, along with little storage cups or similar for stopping all those wee bits getting lost. I briefly goofed by losing the hop nub in the carpet - wife and kids dustracting me, they got the blame - 20 minutes of much swearing and anxious hunting ensued before it was found safe and well. Thirdly, I achieved this with basic household tools. I'm sure there's better gearbox lubricant than white lithium but that's what I had in the garage and I'm sure it won't do harm. It certainly sounds smoother and quieter cycling than previously. My view is anyone with the most basic mechanical knowledge and with a set of poundland screwdrivers could fix an AEG. I'd go as far as say I enjoyed it and it's certainly helped demystify these mysterious machines so many of us are scared to touch. Eezer G6 points -

I brought an LCT AS VAL second hand years back for an incredibly good price (£200 with 10 mid caps), however It has been sat on my gun wall for awhile and needed some TLC. After LCT and TWI announced they were going to release external parts for the gun, I decided I was going to give this gun the TLC it deserves. My LCT AS VAL Modernization project is finally complete.3 points -

Shoot them It is not overshooting if you shoot someone who is already eliminated, it is overshooting to continuously send in a barrage at the same person not giving them a chance to get out If you play any game under my rule sets then sneaky players are encouraged If a player is just bimbling along they may be a sneaky player trying to not look agressive They could be an eliminated player not showing (Or they could be an eliminated player deliberately obstructing and cheating) The eliminated player must accept being shot if they are not showing they are eliminated. It’s their problem If they don’t want to be shot then they can put their hand up (or show a dead rag)3 points -

Went to my first ever proper game (not as a rental) down at Red1 Chiselhurst a couple of weeks ago. Wanted to put up a post to say that it was even more fun that I had hoped it would be. Weather was chilly, crisp but clear and got comfortable as the day went on. I ran out my AEG for the first time. Its a VFC Avalon saber carbine I got off airsoft forums classified's second hand, but it was in basically mint condition. I was really worried it would be a lemon or something and I haven't been able to test it properly since I bought it back in Nov (I live in a small apartment)... but it worked really well after a bit of zeroing. Could probably improve accuracy/consistency by using heavier bbs but even on 0.2s it seemed good to me. Trigger response on 9.9 life's seemed snappy too but I don't have much to compare it to I guess. Only tech hiccup seemed to by my mags, for some reason my hi caps (VFC QRS ones) were a bit inconsistent, so I ended up fucking them off and using the one QRS mid cap and just refilling it as and when I needed to. A bit of a hassle but didn't ruin the day because I was picking my shots and not suppressing too much. Rest of my kit ran well and was very comfy, particular shout out to my goggles (Valken) they didn't fog at all and I was really active and togged up in a few layers with a helmet and mesh snood too. Site itself was a lot of fun - good mix of woodland, CQB and medium range combat, some fun game modes (one or two duds - I wasn't a fan of the fall back game mode on defense, felt like a lot of waiting around and wasn't as much fun as the more dynamic capture the barrel/flag/tdm modes). Seemed a good crowd on the whole, fair few rentals but a load of dudes running their own kit, maybe 40/50 people total perhaps a bit more. Site staff were quite well organized and seemed to be fair when marshaling. Only complaint about this site, and I'm sure they're not the only ones guilty of this, is the lack of toilets/plumbing but luckily that wasn't an issue for me on the day. Only complaint about my kit is that I realised getting a riser for my holo might make things even more comfy and easier to shoot with, and that midcaps seem to be much more reliable/less fuss so will be swapping to those. Highlight moment was a bunch of enemies set up in a building with oversight on our spawn and the area leading out of it. Me and two other rando teammates managed to basically push up on it, sneak under the windows of the building and then breach and clear it from behind. Was the type of moment I hope to have more of playing airsoft and felt really immersive and exciting. Can't wait to get down there again!3 points -

This is the recoil model similar to the TM NGRS AK's. externally it has some Inokatsu laminated furniture worn naturally and the magazine is a RS slab slided early AK mag modified for a midcap internals. Internally it is running a Leviathion V3 and ZCI 400mm inner barrel and Maple Leaf Mr Hop (50).3 points -

After a couple afternoons trying out different options between making spacers for the bolts of the handguard and tightening the bolts in a proper pattern I have accidentally fixed the issue by taking apart the outer barrel and reassembling it. I'm not exactly sure why it fixed it but it has. The outer barrel is now pretty much dead center and has zero wobble. Not going to complain but it would have been nice if there was a clear and obvious issue causing it.2 points

On one occasion at Red 1 Chislehurst, we finished a game and were about 10 to 15 minutes into the next game when we came under fire from one of the villages, which was not in play in the current game but had been the objective in the previous game. The marshals had not told the few players still defending the objective that the previous game had ended. After a few poor experiences, including excessive waiting around, marshals not knowing the rules for a game, the site owner failing to take action after a player shooting at wildlife threatened me for reporting him after he refused to stop doing it (it was clearly stated as being a serious offence in the brief), we finally walked out on a day when a group of players, including my son, reported a player for repeated non hit taking from grenades and BBs. Junior marshal called in the boss marshal who aggressively bollocked the complaining players for not taking their hits and refused to listen as they tried to tell him that they were the ones who had reported the non hit taking. It may have improved; hopefully it has as it is a cracking little site. My eldest son worked at Bunker 51 for a while; it is/was a literal death trap.1 point -

Disclaimer, I have only played there once and my other games were at Bunker 51 which I honestly didn't enjoy at all. By comparison they seemed organised but I've heard other sites have built insanely good reputations. Haven't been able to get anywhere like that yet so I wouldn't take my report as gospel Yeah I really noticed that things felt aimless when playing that fallback gamemode, I think because it was sprawling over a large area it was confusing and people were just sort of waiting around. My site choice is limited at the mo because I don't drive. Might have to consider bringing some bog roll and a fishing seat with a hole cut into the bottom or something... improvise, adapt, overcome...1 point

Be cautious of transferring all that weight you’re currently carrying into a chest rig - you’ll end up with back problems instead! Lighter is better whether that’s belt, chest or vest. During my service I’ve gone through the full cycle of what’s ally - NI chest rig, massive belt kit, battle belt, shooter’s belt, back to chest rigs and belt kits and my knees and back are fubar regardless. Somebody else referenced Project Payne, it’s been around for at least 10 years, and eventually spawned the current popularity of shooter’s belts. But… There’s a lot more to Payne than just carrying less kit in the assault. The problem is/was the inability to properly resource the unit logistic chain and the lack of mechanical mobility in the British Army. Virtus addressed some of the kit issues but logistic and mobility problems persist, plus the ever increasing amount of battery hungry electronics, which is why some troops have gone back to full belt kit.1 point

@Beorn - They're decent bunch at Red1 Chislehurst. I did find that some of the game modes led to wandering around, not knowing which direction the enemy team was shooting from. Twice I stumbled across gun fights between people on the same team. Also yeah, most sites have rubbish toilets, Portaloos at best. Driver Wood in Crawley and Battle Lakes in Kent have proper plumbed indoor cubicles and hot running water though. Funny you mention that actually. There was one player being repeatedly shot, putting their hand up but not moving. Turns out he was part of a group with half of them on each opposing team. He was playing silly buggers to stop his friends on our team from shooting his mate.1 point -

If you are looking at cartilage damage, the operation is minor, btu can take an age to get on the NHS - best get yourself in the system for an MRI so they can pick it up early and take out minimal material. My first time round I left it so long that I was losing serious time out of the working day waiting for the damn thing to reset itself. Ended up getting a private scan in Japan to speed things up as the NHS wanted to wait 6 months just for the scan. Once that's done, the operation, if needed, is often scheduled quite quickly. Speaking from the perspective of having it done twice - once the day before the 7 7 bombings. Then the second time, I was got my operation done literally the day before the first lockdown. Any later and I would have been fecked.1 point -

Thanks all for the replies! I do like the cosplay side of airsoft hence carrying everything but the kitchen sink My knee is looking like cartilage damage (3 weeks and still slighly swollen on the outer side) so deffo need a visit to a professional ? I'm not seriously overweight though losing a couple of pounds wouldn't go amiss (6ft 13 Stone 8 if I breath out ) . Looking at my rig and the positioning of the mags etc a lot of the weight is directly over my left knee so redistribution is on the cards I think. I use HSGI double tacos, so may switch to singles or just take two mags out. And 2 TRMR'S is just overkill I think? I have two SWAT tactical timed grenades that I gave to my lad and they are so much lighter I may have to sell the TRMR's and get a couple more of them...Still toying with the idea of the chest rig though as that should reduce the amount of stuff I carry by not giving me the space to carry it Thanks again everyone for taking the time out to reply, really appreciate it!1 point -

Certainly when it comes to knees and general weight. But then with age comes all sorts of regrets about what could have been in one's youth. Its one of the frustrations of being a father to a grumpy teenager. Mind you, I don't think the current generation of teenagers and twenty something's even know how to have real fun. Certainly when I look back to the shenanigans I got up to some 30 years ago LOL.1 point -
